Meta plans to integrate more generative AI technology into metaverse games, particularly those involving virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. This development was revealed through a recent job posting.
According to the job listing titled “Emerging Tech (GenAI),” Meta is looking to explore and prototype new consumer experiences with innovative games driven by generative AI, such as games that evolve with each playthrough and follow non-deterministic paths. Additionally, the company aims to develop generative AI-powered tools for games that can enhance workflow and time-to-market, or collaborate with third-party creators and vendors.
The focus of these efforts will be on Horizon, a suite of metaverse games, applications, and creation tools.
This move comes at a critical time for Meta’s Reality Labs division, which oversees the company’s various metaverse projects, including the Meta Quest series. Despite selling tens of millions of Quest units, Meta has struggled to attract users to its Horizon mixed reality platform and to recoup billions of dollars in operating losses.
Meta recently revised its metaverse platform strategy, allowing third-party developers to license some of Quest’s software features, such as hand and body tracking. Additionally, due to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s increasing personal interest in Quest headsets, the company has begun to invest more in metaverse gaming projects.
