YouTube’s New Policy on AI-Generated Content Removal

YouTube has quietly introduced a new policy last month that allows users to request the removal of AI-generated content that violates their privacy. According to a news site, this policy addresses content that includes “generated synthetic content” that appears to be created or modified by artificial intelligence.

YouTube will consider multiple factors when deciding whether to remove such content. These factors include whether the content has been altered or is synthetic (and whether this is disclosed), how easily recognizable the person is, and the realism of the content. The company will also take into account whether the content can be considered parody or satire.

Another factor is whether the content involves a public figure engaging in “sensitive conduct,” such as committing a crime, engaging in violence, or endorsing a product or political candidate. TechCrunch highlights the importance of this factor, especially in this critical election year.

This new policy falls under YouTube’s misleading content guidelines rather than privacy violations. In most cases, the company requires first-party claims, with notable exceptions for individuals who are minors, deceased, or unable to access a computer.

YouTube will notify the person or organization that filed the complaint within 48 hours, allowing them to take action. If the content is removed within this time frame, the case is closed. Otherwise, YouTube will review the complaint.

The document states that removing content means complete removal, including the name and personal information of the individual involved. Face blurring is another option. Making the content private is not allowed, as it would enable the owner to easily make it public again.

Although YouTube has not made any major announcements about this change, the company hinted at this update earlier this year when discussing its policies on AI-generated videos. YouTube stated, “As we have already announced, we continue to work on an updated privacy process for the removal of content that includes a recognizable individual, their face, or voice generated by artificial intelligence, or that has been altered in any other way.”
