Linux Foundation’s Open-Source Metaverse: Building a Digital World
The Linux Foundation has unveiled plans to develop an open-source metaverse, aiming for it to be as impactful as the World Wide Web, provided that corporations, developers, and founders unite towards shared objectives.
The foundation of this initiative, named the Open Metaverse Foundation (OMF), is structured around various Key Interest Groups. These groups are tasked with concentrating on distinct areas such as transactions, virtual realms and simulations, networking, as well as security and privacy, alongside law and policy.
A coalition of organizations and the broader open-source community, including the ChainHub Foundation, OpenSDV, and Veriken, have joined forces to establish the foundation, each contributing their extensive expertise.

The Linux Foundation has announced its plans to establish an open-source metaverse, aiming for it to be as impactful as the World Wide Web. This endeavor requires the collective efforts of companies, developers, and founders to realize shared objectives. The Open Metaverse Foundation (OMF) is structured into several Key Interest Groups, each dedicated to specific areas such as transactions, virtual worlds and simulations, networking, security and privacy, and law and policy.
Numerous organizations and the open-source community, including the ChainHub Foundation, OpenSDV, and Veriken, have joined forces to establish the foundation, bringing a wealth of knowledge to the table.
“We are at the beginning of realizing the vision for an open Metaverse, and we acknowledge that many open-source communities and foundations are already working on essential components of this evolving puzzle,” said Royal O’Brien, Executive Director of OMF, during the announcement.
He further emphasized in his blog post, “As we lay the groundwork for an open-source metaverse, it’s evident that collaboration and unity are crucial for ensuring security and stability in a largely uncharted online world. Together, we will engage in discussions, pinpoint, and develop the foundational elements necessary to bring the new Metaverse concept to life. This includes digital assets, simulations, transactions, artificial intelligence, networking, security, privacy, and legal frameworks.”
Moreover, the Linux Foundation serves as a neutral platform for developers to exchange code and collaborate on groundbreaking ideas. It provides a comprehensive framework aimed at integrating technology, as seen with the recently introduced OpenWallet Foundation. This initiative addresses the issue of interoperability between digital wallets, showcasing the Linux Foundation’s extensive project catalogue.
