Apple’s Metaverse Universe for Mixed Reality Glasses: A Game-Changer

Apple has been working on mixed reality headsets and VR/AR systems for some time, and recent developments suggest that the tech giant is constructing its own metaverse virtual world.

The launch of Apple’s mixed reality headset appears to be imminent. The company aims to create not just a product, but an entire ecosystem. New reports provide insights into Apple’s ongoing efforts in this area. According to these reports, Apple is in the process of developing its own metaverse universe.

Here is what is currently known about Apple’s mixed reality headset: It is expected to be priced between $2,000 and $3,000. The headset is likely to feature the M2 chip, similar to those used in Macs, and will be equipped with more than 10 cameras and sensors both inside and outside the device.

Additionally, it is reported that the device will operate on a new operating system named realityOS, which will host mixed reality versions of Apple’s core applications, such as FaceTime and Maps. This new operating system, codenamed Oak, is anticipated to be launched next year.

Another notable aspect is the potential naming of the headset. As followers may recall, Apple filed trademark applications for “Reality Pro” and “Reality One” last August. Given Apple’s existing RealityKit brand, it’s highly plausible that one or both of these names could be used for its mixed reality headset.

Recent hiring trends at Apple indicate a focus on content-driven development for its mixed reality headset. Recruitment efforts and job postings within Apple’s Technology Development Group (TDG) division are centered on roles geared towards creating content for the company’s AR/VR space.

These postings also suggest the development of a dedicated video streaming service specifically for the headset. This aligns with Apple’s acquisition of NextVR, a company known for its partnerships with artists and professional sports leagues, indicating that Apple’s ventures in this area are not a new development.

In addition to the headset, Apple is also working on its own virtual world, akin to a metaverse. While the specifics of what Apple will offer in the 3D mixed reality realm remain unclear, the term “metaverse” may not be explicitly used.

Key personnel have been reassigned to focus on this virtual world and the mixed reality headset, including prominent figures such as engineering director Yaniv Gür, product hardware chief Dan Riccio, and Dave Scott.

These senior executives are set to lead the development of Apple’s “next big thing.” The mixed reality headset, potentially named “Reality Pro” or “Reality One,” is expected to enter mass production in March 2023.
