OpenChat Tests Facial Recognition: Securing Authenticity
OpenChat, a blockchain-based decentralized messaging application, is embarking on an innovative experiment to employ facial recognition technology for authenticating genuine users.
This method aims to confirm the identity of each user, ensuring they maintain only one account on the platform.
Matt Grogan, the creator of OpenChat—a platform often likened to Discord and Slack—highlighted the ease of verifying human presence. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the greater challenge in establishing the uniqueness of each individual.
Grogan expressed concerns over the possibility of users passing various human verification checks to create multiple accounts, underscoring the necessity for a strong system to uniquely identify and verify each user on the platform.
To address this issue, OpenChat plans to integrate facial recognition technology to validate user identities.
“We’re gearing up to trial a facial recognition system to gauge its effectiveness. Although it might not be perfect, we anticipate it will greatly minimize the chances of one person holding multiple identities,” he shared.
Grogan believes that the key to curbing the proliferation of multiple online accounts is to verify the uniqueness of each user. By confirming that all users are distinctly human, the platform aims to bypass the need for additional verification methods.
With a growing community of over 100,000 users, OpenChat has also partnered with Modclub, a decentralized content platform, signaling its commitment to pioneering security and authenticity measures in the digital space. The platform leverages crypto addresses and NFTs for identity verification, showcasing its forward-thinking approach to ensuring user integrity.
