Fei-Fei Li, a prominent Stanford University professor often referred to as the “godmother of artificial intelligence,” has made a significant comeback in the AI field. After a period of relative silence, Li has launched a new AI startup named World Labs, which recently secured a massive $230 million in funding during its latest investment round. This funding has propelled the company’s valuation beyond $1 billion, marking a significant milestone for the startup.
World Labs has attracted major investors, including renowned firms such as Andreessen Horowitz, NEA, and Radical Ventures, all of whom have placed their trust in Li’s vision to shape the future of artificial intelligence.
It will teach artificial intelligence “the world in three dimensions”
World Labs, founded by renowned AI expert Fei-Fei Li, is set to release its first products in 2025. The company aims to develop advanced artificial intelligence models capable of understanding and interacting with the 3D world. One of its key innovations, called the “Big World Model”, will be a tool designed for artists, designers, developers, and engineers. According to Martin Casado of Andreessen Horowitz, potential users of World Labs’ technology could include game developers and movie studios.
Fei-Fei Li, widely known for her pioneering work in computer vision technologies during the 2010s through the ImageNet project, continues to push the boundaries of AI. In addition to her work at World Labs, she has held influential roles, including serving on the board of directors at Twitter and holding executive positions at both the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab.
