Samsung and Google’s First Android XR Headset: Galaxy XR Introduced

Samsung and Google have introduced their first Android XR headset, the Galaxy XR. The $1,800 device comes with a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, a 29-million-pixel micro OLED display, and Gemini-powered Android XR.

Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy XR, its first mixed reality headset developed in partnership with Google. The Galaxy XR, which is the first product to utilize the Android XR platform, has been launched in the US and South Korea with a price tag of $1,800. This makes the Galaxy XR nearly half the price of the Apple Vision Pro.

What are the Technical Details?

At the heart of the Samsung Galaxy XR is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. This processor offers high performance and energy efficiency optimized for mixed reality applications. In terms of display, the device stands out with a micro OLED screen providing 29 million pixels. The panel, supporting a resolution of 3,552 x 3,840 pixels and 96% DCI-P3 color gamut, offers 6 million pixels more density compared to the Apple Vision Pro. However, in terms of refresh rate, the Galaxy XR is limited to 90 Hz, while the Vision Pro can reach 120 Hz.

The device features two high-resolution passthrough cameras, six external sensors for environmental tracking, and two eye-tracking sensors. Thanks to these cameras, the Galaxy XR can recognize natural hand gestures in mixed reality (MR) mode and offers gesture control. Additionally, the iris recognition system can be used both to unlock the device and for password entry in certain applications. Users can also manage the device by connecting physical controllers, a keyboard, or a mouse.

For audio, the Galaxy XR includes Dolby Atmos-supported dual speakers and six microphones. The battery life is specified as two hours for general use and 2.5 hours for video playback. The battery pack is designed as an external unit and weighs 302 grams. The headset itself weighs 545 grams, which is about 200 grams lighter than the Vision Pro.

The interpupillary distance of the Galaxy XR’s optics is 54~70 mm, and separately purchasable prescription lenses are available if needed. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.

Android XR and Gemini Integration

The Galaxy XR runs on Google’s next-generation Android XR operating system. This system is the first Android platform built entirely on the Gemini artificial intelligence. All Google Play Store applications can run on the headset. However, some have been redesigned for mixed reality. For instance, Google Maps can be navigated in a 3D “Immersive View” mode with personalized recommendations thanks to Gemini. Google Photos converts 2D photos into a spatial view, while the YouTube application allows Gemini to provide additional information about videos.

Users can search for information using Circle to Search by looking at objects in their surroundings via the passthrough camera. Also, Google TV, Chrome, and Google Meet are included with Android XR specific versions. The operating system supports multitasking. Consequently, multiple applications can be displayed simultaneously in resizable windows.

Entertainment, Gaming, and Content Creation

The Galaxy XR offers a cinema mode with 4K resolution and provides access to a library of 180-degree and 360-degree VR content. Platforms such as Crunchyroll, HBO Max, and Peacock have prepared Android XR versions. Sports fans can use the multi-viewing mode in applications like MLB and Fox Sports.

For content creators, support for Adobe Project Pulsar is notable. This application allows users to add 3D depth to videos and place subtitles behind the scene. In terms of gaming, VR games like NFL Pro Era and Inside [JOB] are available on the platform. In compatible games, Gemini can provide real-time coaching and in-game tips.

The Ecosystem is Expanding

The Galaxy XR is seen as the first step in Google’s Android XR vision. The company is investing not only in headsets but also in the smart glasses category in collaboration with Samsung. In this context, Android XR smart glasses developed in partnership with Warby Parker will be introduced soon.

Samsung Galaxy XR Price and Release Date

The Galaxy XR is now available for sale in the US and South Korea for $1,800. Additionally, the Galaxy XR Travel Case and Galaxy XR Controller accessories will be sold for $250 each. Samsung is gifting an Explorer Pack to customers who purchase the device before the end of the year. This package includes 12 months of access to Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass, along with the NFL Pro Era, Project Pulsar, Calm, and Asteroid applications.
