OpenAI’s Humanoid Robot Eve: A Step into the Future

OpenAI aims to extend its presence beyond just artificial intelligence software. The company’s investment in humanoid robot manufacturer 1X underscores this ambition. And now, let’s introduce the humanoid robot “Eve.”

Norwegian humanoid robot manufacturer 1X recently shared a new video about its humanoid robot “Eve.” In the video, the company emphasized that there are no artificial enhancements, accelerations, edits, or scripted demonstrations for assembly, explaining that all the robots are controlled by neural networks and operate autonomously.

Notably, last year, 1X received a $25 million investment from OpenAI and an additional $100 million earlier this year, marking a significant collaboration.

Humanoid robot: Eve

Overall, 1X’s humanoids appear to be in a slightly earlier development stage compared to the work of companies like Tesla, Figure, Sanctuary, or Agility, for instance. Currently, Eve lacks feet or dexterous humanoid hands. Instead, it operates on wheels and possesses basic hands. Additionally, the company has developed a bipedal model named “Neo,” which closely resembles a human.

However, Eve demonstrates that appearances are not critically important in these initial stages of general-purpose robotics. At present, many robotics companies aim to deploy humanoid robots for repetitive tasks in industrial settings. The primary objective is straightforward: “take this item and move it there,” which doesn’t necessitate the ability to play the piano with one’s fingers. Likewise, humanoid feet are not a requirement at this stage. The primary challenge lies in enabling these machines to rapidly learn new tasks.

In 1X’s video, Eve appears to have mastered these functions. The robot is shown picking up items, placing them elsewhere, autonomously opening doors, and heading to the charging station to plug itself in when necessary. As of now, the company has not specified a commercial release date or target. Meanwhile, rival companies are gradually progressing towards commercialization. The capabilities of the Eve humanoids are showcased in the video below.
