China Unstoppable in Humanoid Robotics: Securing 97% of Global Shipments

I spend a lot of my time tracking how physical hardware and artificial intelligence intersect, and every once in a while, a set of market metrics drops that genuinely makes me stop and rethink the entire global landscape. This is one of those moments.
While Western tech giants have spent the past couple of years showing off incredibly polished promotional videos of humanoid prototypes, Chinese companies have quietly done what they do best: they built the supply chains, scaled production, and dominated the actual market.
According to fresh data from California-based Smart Analytics Global, over 97% of all humanoid robots shipped globally came directly from Chinese manufacturers. We aren’t talking about lab concepts anymore; we are officially in the era of mass-market robotic deployment.
The Numbers: Explosive Growth in Mass Production

When you analyze the shipment data, the sheer velocity of this industry’s scaling is staggering.
Around 19,000 humanoid robots were shipped worldwide—more than triple the 5,100 units shipped in the exact same timeframe a year prior. Analysts project that global shipments will hit 60,000 units by the end of December, with projections targeting a massive 500,000 units per year.
What caught my attention wasn’t just the overall market expansion, but who is actually shipping these units:
- Agibot (Shanghai): Shipped a massive 8,400 units, capturing 44% of the global market single-handedly and claiming the top spot worldwide.
- Unitree Robotics: Followed close behind with 5,900 units shipped.
- Western Competitors (Tesla, Figure AI, Agility): Together make up less than 3% of total commercial deliveries.
While North American firms are still running closed-beta testing in specialized factory environments, Chinese manufacturers are shipping thousands of functional units directly onto logistics floors, commercial sites, and industrial facilities.
The Real Advantage: Ecosystem, Not Just Assembly

Why is China crushing the competition so decisively? Having audited hardware supply chains for various tech projects over the years, I can tell you that the secret is almost never just the final assembly line. It’s the component ecosystem.
Building a humanoid robot requires highly specialized, high-precision hardware:
- Harmonic Reducers & Gearboxes for fluid joint movements.

- 3D Depth Sensors & LiDAR for spatial awareness.
Over half of the world’s primary suppliers for these exact components are based inside China. While Western companies have to deal with cross-border supply chain friction, high tariffs, and long import lead times, Chinese robot builders simply source everything domestically. This localized network drives manufacturing costs down significantly while dramatically reducing time-to-market for new iterations.
Add heavy strategic backing from both national and municipal governments—in the form of massive subsidies, public sector procurement contracts, and dedicated R&D grants—and you have a market momentum that is nearly impossible for unassisted competitors to check.
The Western Response: National Security Restrictions

The geopolitical reaction to this market dominance was swift. Recognizing the immense data-gathering capabilities of autonomous hardware, the US government officially issued a comprehensive import ban on Chinese-made humanoid and quadruped robots.
The official justification cites cyber-security, supply chain vulnerabilities, and potential unauthorized surveillance risks associated with internet-connected, sensor-heavy autonomous machines operating near critical infrastructure.
While I understand the security rationale, a blanket ban creates a massive dilemma for Western enterprise adoption: How do Western industries stay competitive in automation when the most cost-effective, readily available hardware on the planet is completely off-limits to them?
The Path Ahead
We are witnessing a profound structural shift in robotics. The West currently holds a strong lead in foundational AI model architectures, but China is undeniably winning the physical hardware and manufacturing race.
If Western companies cannot lower their production costs and scale their supply chains rapidly, they risk being priced out of the global market outside of North America and Europe.
