Before a meeting with technology leaders at the White House, U.S. President Joe Biden spoke to the press, underscoring the socio-economic and security challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI), while acknowledging its “extraordinary” potential.
Today, he announced that seven leading tech companies have made voluntary commitments to adhere to AI-related standards based on three foundational principles: safety, security, and trust.
Biden stated that these companies would guarantee the safety of their technologies through requisite testing and evaluations prior to their public release.
Highlighting the importance of security, he mentioned that these firms would tackle potential cyber and national security risks associated with their systems. To build trust, he added, companies will label AI-generated content, making consumers aware of its origins.
Despite AI’s potential benefits, Biden emphasized the need for vigilance against the risks that emerging technologies might pose to democracy and societal values.
He pointed out the swift pace of technological advancement, calling for legal measures to ensure security and reiterated his dedication to fostering responsible innovation through ongoing government actions.
The White House disclosed today that seven U.S. companies, including OpenAI, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, have pledged to follow security protocols before releasing their AI products into the market.
