Apple Explains How Artificial Intelligence Features Work

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a dominant force in recent years, and Apple wasn’t about to miss a beat. WWDC 2024 saw AI take center stage, with the company unveiling the inner workings of its intelligent features integrated across various platforms.

The focus was on Apple Intelligence, a system designed to enhance user experience on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. To achieve this, Apple crafted intricate models specifically designed to understand and assist with everyday tasks.

At the heart of the system lies a powerful on-device language model, boasting approximately 3 billion parameters. This model works in tandem with a larger server-based counterpart running on Apple’s own silicon servers. But Apple Intelligence goes beyond just language. A dedicated coding model empowers Xcode, while a diffusion model tackles visual expression, creating a comprehensive AI suite.

On-device and Private Cloud system

Apple explained how the artificial intelligence features it introduced at the 2024 WWDC and integrated into different platforms work.

Artificial intelligence tools, which have become some of the most popular technologies recently, were the star of WWDC 2024. The engineering behind the AI tools announced for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia was revealed today. Apple created models of daily user tasks for its Apple Intelligence AI.

An on-device language model with approximately 3 billion parameters has been optimized for this system. Additionally, a larger server-based model running on Apple silicon servers has been developed. These models are part of a larger framework that includes a coding model for Xcode and a diffusion model for visual expression.
