AI Photo Contest: Real Photo Wins Grand Prize

A photographer who participated in an artificial intelligence photography contest won the competition with a real photo but was subsequently disqualified.

There is significant criticism regarding the participation of AI-generated images in photo contests. This time, a photographer was disqualified because he did not submit an AI-generated photo, leading to his awards being revoked. Photographer Miles Astray was nominated in the artificial intelligence category for the prestigious 1839 Awards, which focus on new technologies.

His work “F I L A M I N G O N E,” featuring a headless flamingo, was captured in 2022 on a beach in Aruba with a Nikon D750 camera using a 50mm prime lens, f/1.8 aperture, and 1/1600 shutter speed. The photo won both the third prize and the People’s Choice award in the competition.

The jury, composed of members from The New York Times, Christie’s, and Getty Images, announced that while they acknowledged the creativity and impressiveness of Astray’s photo, they awarded the prizes to images in the category that were created using artificial intelligence. Consequently, Astray was disqualified from the competition.
