Turkey Launches Metaverse-Based University Education in 2025

In a groundbreaking move, a university in Turkey has officially transitioned some of its courses to the Metaverse, marking a new chapter in the digitalization of education. As of the Spring 2025 semester, students have begun attending classes in fully immersive virtual classrooms, using their digital avatars to interact with instructors and peers.

Rather than walking into physical classrooms, students now log into the Metaverse platform where they participate in lessons using customized avatars. Courses are delivered using 3D environments, virtual whiteboards, and interactive tools that simulate real-world laboratories. Through these digital learning environments, students can conduct experiments and engage in group activities without ever setting foot on campus.
Digital Transformation Sparks Debate in Education

While experts praise this initiative as a major advancement in education technology, it also raises concerns regarding digital access and technological inequality. Students without access to high-speed internet or virtual reality (VR) equipment may find themselves at a disadvantage, potentially widening the gap in educational accessibility.
Pilot Program May Expand Across the University

The implementation of Metaverse-based classes is currently limited to select departments. However, university officials have stated that, pending positive feedback, the program could be expanded to include a broader range of disciplines—including not only technical subjects, but also social sciences and humanities.
