Meta Shelved Project “XROS”: No Development of Operating System
US-based technology giant Meta has officially announced the cancellation of its project codenamed “XROS,” which aimed to develop a new operating system from scratch for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices, including Meta’s Quest.
As a result, the XROS team, consisting of over 300 employees, will be disbanded, and these individuals will be reassigned to other departments within Meta.
The company clarified that it will continue using the Android operating system, developed by Google, for its AR and VR devices. Meta had intended for the XROS project to create an operating system that could power its upcoming augmented reality glasses.
However, the decision to discontinue the project signals a strategic shift in favor of leveraging the existing Android platform for faster product development.
It’s noteworthy that Meta has been utilizing the Android operating system in its augmented reality and virtual reality devices since their launch.
This move aligns with the company’s goal of streamlining its operations and focusing on more efficient strategies in the rapidly evolving metaverse landscape.
APPLE DEVELOPS ITS OWN OPERATING SYSTEM FOR AUGMENTED REALITY GLASSES
Apple, a major competitor to Meta in the market, has recently been in the spotlight with reports of developing an operating system for its augmented reality (AR) devices.
The open-source codes discovered on GitHub and references in the App Store suggest that the operating system for Apple’s AR and virtual reality (VR) glasses is named ‘RealityOS.’
These details were uncovered by software developers, and it has been suggested that Apple may offer early access to its proprietary operating system to developers in the near future.
This move indicates Apple’s commitment to advancing its capabilities in the AR and VR space, aligning with the broader trend of tech companies investing in metaverse-related technologies.
