Google Messages App Gets Artificial Intelligence Support

Google’s artificial intelligence assistant, Gemini, is now being widely distributed as part of an integration update with Google Messages.

Announced at Google’s I/O 2024 event, Gemini aims to enhance users’ messaging experience by integrating AI capabilities into the Google Messages app.

The Gemini era in Google Messages has officially begun

Gemini is a new chat assistant in the Google Messages app. Users will see Gemini as the first contact when they want to start a new conversation. After agreeing to some terms, users are redirected to a standard messaging interface. This interface includes options for emojis and gallery access, but there is no option to send voice notes.

Gemini allows users to draft messages, brainstorm, plan events, and have fun conversations. Optimized specifically for Google Messages to provide more concise responses, Gemini enables users to have direct one-on-one conversations, which cannot be attached to other conversations.

Gemini can be integrated with extensions such as Workspace (Gmail, etc.), YouTube, and Google Maps. Users can long-press on a reply to leave feedback by liking or disliking, starring, and forwarding replies. Chats occur over RCS (internet connection required), but end-to-end encryption is not supported.

This feature, which has been available to beta users since March, will now be available to a wide range of users outside the EEA (European Economic Area), the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and India.
