The world’s richest player, Elon Musk, dropped some serious loot in a recent podcast, revisiting Bitcoin after a long silence and defining it as a “fundamental, physics-based currency.”

Musk stated, “Real money is energy. That’s why I say Bitcoin is based on energy. You can’t patch energy with legislation; you can’t just pass a law and spawn an energy surplus.” He emphasized that generating or optimizing energy is strictly hard-coded into reality—it’s difficult to fake.
Musk also pointed to the Kardashev Scale—the scientific framework that ranks civilizations by their energy mastery—as a critical HUD for evaluating civilization’s progress.
The Future of Currency: Game Over for Cash?
Musk predicts that money itself might eventually get deleted from the server. “In a future where everyone has access to everything, I don’t think we’ll need money as a database for labor allocation,” he explained. He argued that once AI and robotics level up enough to meet all human needs, the concept of money will become meaningless.
The Tesla CEO found the blueprints for this vision in Iain M. Banks’ “Culture” series. This sci-fi saga depicts one of the ultimate post-scarcity civilizations. The Culture is a galactic society with no money, no scarcity, where grinding for work is totally optional, humans have extended lifespans, and super-intelligent AIs—known as “Minds“—administer the system. Musk noted, “In the Culture books describing this far future, there is no money. People can basically loot or craft whatever they want.”
