US Space Force Bans ChatGPT , Data Security Concerns

The US Space Force has suspended the use of web-based generative AI platforms, including ChatGPT, due to concerns about data security.

Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT excels in providing human-like responses to a wide range of questions, similar to a knowledgeable personal instructor.

However, using ChatGPT comes with privacy challenges.

To address data protection concerns, the US Space Force has banned its personnel from accessing web-based generative AI platforms like ChatGPT.

Space Force members, known as Guardians, are now prohibited from utilizing AI tools that involve large language models.

Banned from government computers

Such software is banned from use on government computers until it receives official approval from the Chief Technology and Innovation Office.

Air Force spokeswoman Tanya Downsworth said in a statement:

A strategic pause has been placed on the use of Generative AI and Big Language Models within the U.S. Space Force while the Space Force determines the best path forward to integrate AI models into the Guard’s roles and the USSF mission.

ChatGPT’s water consumption

Approximations indicate that each ChatGPT interaction, consisting of approximately 20-50 exchanges, consumes around 500 milliliters of water.

Likewise, Google’s AI chatbot, Bard, utilizes water through its liquid cooling system. Both Google and Microsoft have set an ambitious objective to reduce water consumption in their data center cooling systems by an impressive 95% by 2024.
