The US Military Wants to Conduct Exercises in The Metaverse

The American military is currently in the process of developing its own Metaverse project, leveraging advancements in VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) technologies.

While technology companies, particularly Meta, have been at the forefront of adopting the Metaverse concept, the US military is taking steps to establish its own digital universe for various applications.

In a recent development, two US Army pilots conducted flights using Berkut 540 jets over the California desert. What set these flights apart was the use of AR glasses by both pilots. Through these AR glasses, a simulated image was projected, creating the illusion of a tanker plane flying alongside them.

Subsequently, one of the planes approached this virtual fuel plane, engaging in a simulated refueling exercise. This marked an initial step toward the realization of the American military’s Metaverse initiative.

The ultimate goal involves transitioning from AR glasses to VR glasses, enabling these exercises to be conducted in a fully virtual environment. This forward-looking strategy aims to facilitate intricate and detailed military exercises within the Metaverse.

For instance, simulations of cities to be operated can be created within this digital universe, allowing realistic training scenarios to be executed. The successful implementation of this technology could provide the US military with a significant strategic advantage in various operational contexts.
