The “Projects” Feature for ChatGPT Is Now Free

OpenAI has made the “Projects” feature of ChatGPT available to free users. This feature allows users to organize conversations into folders, offering file uploads and personalization options.
Previously exclusive to paid subscribers, the “Projects” feature is now accessible on the free version of ChatGPT. It enables users to organize their conversations with the AI by specific topics, and personal settings provide more control over how the AI responds.
More Than a Simple Folder System

While it might seem like a basic folder system, “Projects” allows users to set specific instructions and limit which files or information the AI can access. Additionally, OpenAI has updated the file upload limits for this feature: free users can add up to 5 files, Plus subscribers can add 25 files, and Pro subscribers can add 40 files. All users can also personalize their projects with custom colors and icons.
OpenAI has consistently followed a strategy of gradually opening up many of its premium features to free users. Previously, tools like ChatGPT Voice and Deep Research were first offered to subscribers and then made available to all users. However, free access often comes with some limitations. For example, although the GPT-5 model was shared with all users at the same time, free users have a more limited daily usage quota.
The “Projects” feature is currently available on the web and the Android app. OpenAI has announced that the feature will be available on iOS in the coming days.
