Second Life: Pioneering the Metaverse on Mobile

Second Life, a forerunner of the Metaverse concept that Facebook is endeavoring to materialize, is set to arrive on mobile devices 20 years after its initial release.

The concept of the Metaverse, which envisions a virtual world as an alternative to real life, has recently surged in popularity due to Meta’s initiatives.

However, the idea of this virtual universe predates Meta’s involvement. Platforms that can be considered precursors to what is now referred to as the Metaverse were established to bring this concept to life, with Second Life being among the most notable.

Second Life was designed to provide users with a digital second life. While its user base may not have reached astronomical numbers, it has garnered sufficient interest to sustain itself to this day. Now, as the Metaverse concept gains unprecedented attention, Second Life, a platform that has nurtured the virtual universe idea for over 20 years, is poised for a significant leap forward.

Linden Labs, the creators of Second Life, have announced the imminent arrival of the platform on mobile devices. The mobile version of Second Life is expected to be released to users very soon, with anticipations for a beta version before the year’s end, although a specific date has yet to be disclosed.

A promotional video uploaded by the Linden Labs team to their YouTube channel offers a glimpse of what the mobile app will look like.

Built with the Unity engine, this app will be available for iOS and Android, compatible with both smartphones and tablets. The transition of Second Life to mobile is anticipated to amplify interest in this enduring virtual universe.
