Renault could introduce hybrid versions of the electric Megane and Scenic. Plug-in hybrid and range-extender versions are currently on the agenda for the new multi-energy platform for the Megane E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech, which are currently only offered in a 100% electric form.
Renault had launched the Megane and Scenic models solely as 100% electric vehicles. However, hybrid versions for this duo may come onto the agenda. Company executives confirmed that the brand’s new multi-fuel-supported platform is under development. This platform will form the basis of Renault’s future C-segment models. –
Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive explained that the platform is primarily being developed as an all-electric architecture but is also designed to support plug-in hybrid and range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) powertrains. This flexibility will allow other options to be easily added if electric sales do not progress at the expected pace.
Stating that Renault has been successful with the all-electric platform in the B-segment, Cambolive said that a multi-energy plan would be more suitable for the C and D segments. This approach will enable the brand to offer flexible power options in its larger models. The new platform is expected to hit the market around 2030.
Although executives did not detail which models the platform will cover, the timing suggests the renewal of the CMF-EV-based Megane E-Tech, introduced in 2022, and the Scenic models launched in 2024. This means Renault could offer these two currently all-electric models with internal combustion engine options again.
Cambolive explained that the developed hybrid system would be based on a structure where the electric motors handle the propulsion, and the petrol engine functions only as a generator to charge the battery. Cambolive stated, “Do we want series propulsion or direct propulsion? The logic favors all-electric traction,” adding that this method would allow drivers to experience electric driving without range anxiety.
Although there is no information about the source of the small petrol engine, it is thought that the engine could be developed by Horse, a joint venture between Renault and Geely.
The new C-segment platform is part of Renault’s strategy to increase production efficiency. The company aims to reduce the production time to 21 months and cut costs by 25%, similar to the recently introduced Twingo model.
