OpenAI Announces ChatGPT Crashes Due to Cyberattack

Yesterday, OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, acknowledged that there have been intermittent access issues with the platform and its developer tools. These problems have been linked to Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.

Over the past 24 hours, users have encountered sporadic difficulties when attempting to access ChatGPT, a product developed by OpenAI.

While some users received messages stating that ChatGPT is currently at full capacity, others faced challenges logging into the application. OpenAI has released a statement to address these concerns.

ChatGPT is under DDoS attack

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, initially linked the platform’s issues to the introduction of new features, noting that user demand had surpassed expectations following the company’s inaugural developer conference. However, he later announced that these issues had been resolved.

Following this, users experienced intermittent problems accessing the ChatGPT API. OpenAI updated their statement, indicating that the access difficulties were due to an unusual traffic pattern, suggesting a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack aimed at inundating servers with an overload of requests.

OpenAI did not provide detailed information about the specifics of the attack. TechCrunch reported that Anonymous Sudan, despite its name, a group purportedly operating with Russian support, claimed responsibility for the attack. Similarly, Claude, an AI developed by Anthropic, a rival to OpenAI, was also targeted in a similar attack. Currently, any direct link between these two incidents remains unconfirmed.
