Meta’s Horizon Worlds: Bringing the Metaverse to Europe

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has shifted its focus towards the concept of the metaverse. Believing in the future potential of this domain, the company has been steering its efforts accordingly.

In line with this vision, Meta launched a virtual world game named Horizon Worlds, based on the metaverse concept, in December of the previous year.

This initiative marks a significant step in their journey into the realm of virtual reality, expanding the company’s portfolio beyond traditional social media platforms.

Facebook, indicating a strategic pivot towards virtual reality and Metaverse initiatives, has expressed its intention to move beyond being predominantly recognized as a social media company.

Under the rebranded name Meta, the technology giant initially launched its social VR platform, Horizon Worlds, for users aged 18 and above in Canada and the United States in December.

Encouraged by the platform’s positive trajectory, Meta is now aiming to broaden its reach beyond North America. In this pursuit, the company has expanded Horizon Worlds to Europe, introducing the platform in France and Spain.

The UK witnessed the launch of Horizon Worlds in June. Meta is ambitiously planning to extend its services across the entirety of Europe in a short timeframe. However, the timeline for the platform’s launch in Turkey remains uncertain.

Horizon Worlds represents Meta’s first major application since unveiling its metaverse strategy. This platform empowers creators to design and integrate their own games into the base game, akin to the model employed by Roblox and other creator-centric applications. This approach allows for a diverse range of games to be available within a unified structure.

The game is accessible at no cost to owners of the Oculus Quest 2, a product of Oculus, a subsidiary of Meta. Individuals aged 18 and older can create their own VR avatar in the game, which, interestingly, will be without legs – reminiscent of the avatars used in Meta’s workplace-oriented meeting systems. With this avatar, players can commence their gaming experience in Horizon Worlds.
