LinkedIn’s New AI Decision Won’t Please Many of You

LinkedIn has announced that it will use the data of all users on its platform to train its artificial intelligence. Of course, you have the option to opt out. The most popular social network for business, LinkedIn, announced that starting on November 3, it will begin using user profiles, posts, resumes, and other public activities to train its AI models. The biggest point of contention is that this feature will be on by default. This means users will have to manually turn it off in their settings if they do not want their data to be used.

According to LinkedIn, users can disable this feature through the “Data Usage for AI Improvements” setting, but this action will only apply to data collected after that date. Any information collected before then will remain in the training environment. The new policy will cover millions of profiles not only in the UK but also in EU countries, the EEA, Switzerland, Canada, and Hong Kong. Microsoft is not facing any issues with this approach at this stage, as it has classified leaving the setting on by default as a “legitimate interest” within the legal framework. Additionally, it has been stated that the data of users under 18 will not be included in this process.

Meanwhile, Meta had announced a similar move for Facebook and Instagram but was forced to a temporary halt following an objection from the UK’s data protection authority. It has now resumed its data-based training after providing users with clearer opt-out options.
