Introducing Rabbit R1: The AI Device Redefining Application Usage

At CES 2024, which has been showcasing a plethora of innovations in artificial intelligence, a U.S. startup named Rabbit introduced an AI device called R1. Amidst the various cutting-edge technologies on display at the fair, Rabbit’s R1 stands out as a notable addition.

The Rabbit R1 is a compact artificial intelligence device, small enough to fit in a pocket, differentiating it from a smartphone. Essentially, it’s designed to function as a portable assistant that users can carry anywhere.

While it might seem similar to the AI assistants commonly found on phones, Rabbit asserts that their device is quite distinct. This differentiation suggests that the R1 offers unique features or capabilities that set it apart from standard smartphone-based assistants.

Rabbit R1 quickly imitates you by learning how you use apps

The Rabbit R1, introduced by the startup Rabbit, is a voice-operated mobile device equipped with a small 2.88-inch touchscreen.

Alongside this, it features a scroll wheel, two microphones for voice commands, a speaker for responses, and a unique 360-degree camera termed the “Rabbit Eye.

” Under the hood, the device is powered by the MediaTek Helio P35 processor, and it boasts 128 GB of storage, 4 GB of RAM, a USB-C port, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a 4G-enabled SIM slot. A charming detail is that upon activating the screen, users are greeted by a tiny, adorable bunny animation.

So, what exactly is the purpose of the R1? This artificial intelligence-powered device runs on an operating system called Rabbit OS, and it’s designed to manage and interact with all your applications on your behalf. The company claims that using the R1 for these tasks will be faster compared to traditional smartphones, offering a more efficient and possibly more intuitive user experience.

Rabbit asserts that their R1 model is capable of learning a user’s intentions and behaviors when interacting with apps. Once it has undergone this training, it can swiftly replicate these actions. Essentially, the R1 is designed to operate just like its user, capable of managing and utilizing apps on their behalf.

It can record learned actions and replicate them later as needed. In a demonstration showcased by the company, CEO Jesse Lyu illustrated how he taught the device to create visuals using Midjourney, exemplifying the device’s learning and replication capabilities. This feature highlights the R1’s potential to function as a personalized, intelligent assistant, adapting to the unique preferences and habits of each user.

R1, which will use apps for you, is claimed to be faster than ChatGPT

For instance, consider connecting Spotify to the Rabbit R1. This device does more than just play music; it can execute additional tasks such as playing other songs from the same album. Moreover, it has the capability to provide information like lyrics and details about the music’s ownership.

This functionality bears some resemblance to ChatGPT in its ability to interact and provide information. However, Rabbit asserts that their R1 operates faster than ChatGPT, indicating a significant emphasis on speed and efficiency in their AI technology. This aspect of the Rabbit R1 positions it as a potentially more agile and responsive assistant in handling various tasks and queries.

Additionally, the Rabbit R1 is designed to perform tasks such as summoning a ride to your location or making hotel reservations using apps like Uber on your behalf. For instance, if you tell the R1 to “request an Uber for me and six of my friends,” the device will understand to call for a larger vehicle, such as an UberXL, rather than a regular car.

However, there are questions about how easily the average user will be able to train the R1. This aspect will become clearer once the product is released.

While Rabbit has claimed that the R1’s battery life lasts “all day,” specific details regarding this have not been provided. The product is priced at $199 and is expected to be available in the U.S. around March or April.
