India has implemented a new policy requiring companies to secure government approval before deploying their AI models. This move underscores India’s proactive stance in the global conversation on artificial intelligence.
The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a directive last Friday, cautioning major technology firms to obtain authorization from the government prior to introducing new AI technologies.
The directive emphasizes the necessity for these companies to guarantee their products or services are free from bias or discrimination and pose no risk to the integrity of the electoral process.
They were asked to submit a report
While the ministry has clarified that the recommendation is not legally mandatory, India’s Deputy IT Minister, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, hinted that it foreshadows future regulatory measures.
The experienced politician stressed, “Today we are making this recommendation and we strongly encourage your compliance.”
The recommendation mandates technology companies to submit a “Measures Taken and Status Report” to the ministry within 15 days.
In this report, companies are required to detail their efforts to counter misinformation and disinformation, as well as to verify that their services maintain neutrality and objectivity.
