Increasing Trademark Applications for Metaverse and NFTs

According to information provided by intellectual property attorney Mike Kondoudis on Tuesday, the number of trademark applications filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in the sectors of cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency services has surpassed 3,600 as of August 31 this year.

This figure exceeds the total of 3,516 applications recorded in 2021. Additionally, Kondoudis noted a significant surge in NFT-related applications: while 2021 saw a total of 2,087 applications, the count for 2022 has already exceeded 5,008.

Furthermore, the volume of applications in the Metaverse and Web3 sectors has more than doubled within a year. In 2021, there were 1,866 applications, but this number has risen to 4,150 in 2022.

Data from March 2022 indicates that three sectors have seen the highest number of trademark applications.

In the NFT arena, there were 1,078 applications, the cryptocurrency field received 604 applications, and the metaverse sector saw 759 applications.

For instance, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in March that the company is gearing up to introduce NFTs on Instagram.

Additionally, the luxury brand Hermès filed a patent on September 1 to secure rights for using its name in the metaverse, NFT, and virtual currency domains. Previously, the company had taken legal action against Mason Rothschild, the founder of MetaBirkins, for marketing NFT sales under the Hermès-owned Birkin brand name.
