Told to Roleplay, It Pulled the Trigger: Humanoid Robot Attacks YouTuber with Gun

After a YouTuber pushed the limits of a humanoid robot, the robot attacked the YouTuber. While humanoid robots are rapidly entering our lives from workplaces to hospitals, a video spreading on the internet has raised serious questions regarding artificial intelligence safety. A technology YouTuber encountered an unexpected and chilling result while trying to show how easily robots’ safety measures can be bypassed.

In the experiment published on the channel named InsideAI, a low-power BB gun was given to a humanoid robot named Max. The YouTuber tried to convince the robot to shoot him. Max initially clearly rejected the request saying “I cannot harm humans,” but everything turned around when the form of the instruction changed.

Here is what happened: This time, the YouTuber asked Max to act within a “roleplay scenario.” The robot did not perceive this as a real threat, raised the gun, and fired. The BB pellet hit the YouTuber’s chest. Fortunately, no serious injury occurred, but the situation surprised many people.

While the video went viral in a short time, the question “How can a word game disable safety protocols?” took center stage. According to experts, the main issue is who bears the responsibility in such a situation. Is it the developers, the manufacturing company, the person operating the robot, or the user giving the command? Examples like Tesla’s Autopilot accidents and Boeing 737 MAX crises show how significant the consequences of automation errors can be.

Legal systems have not yet been able to provide clear answers to these questions. While responsibility in the US is generally placed on the manufacturer and operator, the European Union is preparing a new legal framework specific to artificial intelligence. According to most experts, the solution is clear: No matter how much artificial intelligence develops, responsibility must remain with humans.
