Google is introducing a new feature in its Search engine that will help users determine whether an image is real or AI-generated.
With the advancements in artificial intelligence, most people are now aware of how far AI has come in generating visuals. Generative AI no longer produces images with distorted features like crooked ears or extra hands, making it increasingly difficult to tell the difference between AI-generated images and real ones. To address this issue, Google has announced the implementation of a new technical standard aimed at detecting images that have been created or altered by AI.
These standards, developed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), will soon be integrated into Google Search. This will allow users to verify the source and authenticity of an image. Earlier this year, Google collaborated with C2PA to implement the latest version of these standards.

Thanks to this feature, which will initially be available in Search, users will be able to click on the “About this image” tab to access more information and determine whether artificial intelligence was used to create the image. Google also plans to extend these standards to ads and YouTube videos in the future.
As one of the biggest supporters of C2PA in the tech industry, Google is joined by other companies such as Sony and Leica. Nikon and Canon are also among the companies that have committed to adopting these standards.
It is currently unknown whether these standards will be implemented on Google’s Android platform. Additionally, whether Apple will introduce a similar feature remains a point of curiosity.
