Google Explains the Origin of the “Nano Banana” Name

Google announced that the name of its new AI model, “Nano Banana,” was born out of a midnight inspiration. The name, which was initially entered casually, became so popular among the public that Google adopted it as the official product name. Speaking on the Made by Google podcast, product lead David Sharon explained in detail how the name originated and why it transitioned from a codename to the final product name.

Google’s AI model, Nano Banana,” actually got its name completely by chance. The company’s product manager randomly typed “Nano Banana” while entering an anonymous name into the system around 2:30 a.m. Naturally, there was no plan at the time for the name to go viral and become the final product name.

The model’s name first appeared on the LM Arena benchmark site, instantly capturing the attention of social media users. The fun and catchy name quickly gained widespread traction. This spread reached such a point that Google embraced the name and turned it into the official product name.
