Artificial Intelligence: Your New Best Friend for Game Design – 5 Tips

If you’re into game development, artificial intelligence is about to become your new best friend. So why is AI so important for game design?

When you hear “artificial intelligence,” you probably think of chatbots or impressive image generators. But what if we told you this technology is already revolutionizing the gaming world? AI is no longer just simple code that controls our enemies. From the ideation phase to the final tests, it’s a candidate to be your greatest helper and a new best friend at every step of the game development process.

If you’re someone who thinks, “I wish I could make my own game!” or wants to add a new superpower to your existing game development knowledge, AI is your new best friend. In this content, we won’t tell you how to write code, but we will give you a brief look at the points you should touch on while designing your game.

1. Make NPCs Smarter

Think of NPCs (Non-Player Characters) in classic games. They usually patrol a certain route, say a few standard lines when they see you, and that’s it. Artificial intelligence is changing this completely. Thanks to modern AI algorithms, NPCs can now dynamically react to player movements, communicate with each other, and even remember past events.

2. Create Infinite Worlds

Do you want to offer a unique experience for every player? This is where AI-supported procedural content generation (PCG) comes in. AI can create random but consistent maps, dungeons, planets, or quests within specific rules. This way, your game’s replayability soars.

For example, even when designing a simple dungeon game, you can use an AI algorithm that changes the location of rooms, traps, and enemies in every playthrough. This ensures the player faces a new challenge each time. The logic behind games like No Man’s Sky is based on this principle.

3. Concept Art and Visual Production

One of the most important elements that determines a game’s atmosphere is its visual world. However, character designs, environmental drawings, or concept art can be both time-consuming and costly. Text-to-image AI tools like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion dramatically speed up this process.

First, describe the character or place you have in mind in detail as text (for example, “a robot detective equipped with old technological parts, standing under neon lights in a cyberpunk city”). You can draw inspiration from dozens of different visuals produced by the AI, use them directly as concept art, or make modifications to them to reach the final design.

4. Your Creative Partner in Scenario and Dialogue Writing

The soul of a good game is its story, but sometimes you can get stuck. This is where large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT can become a great brainstorming partner. We didn’t call it your best friend for nothing, right?

Ask it to generate different backstories for your main character. Request multiple solutions for a quest. You can even have it write different versions of boring dialogues to make them more engaging. The important thing here is not for the AI to write for you, but to spark your creative ideas. The rest is up to you.

5. Game Balancing and Testing

Is a new weapon in your game too powerful? Is a certain section too difficult to pass? Finding these kinds of balancing issues normally requires hundreds of hours of human testing. However, AI can simulate thousands of different game scenarios in seconds.

Create an AI bot and have it play your game repeatedly. By analyzing where the bot gets stuck, which strategies always win, or where unexpected bugs occur, you can make your game much more balanced and bug-free.

Of course, this should still be the path you choose with limited resources. Having multiple people test the game is always a healthier option.

Is Coding Knowledge a Must for Making Games with AI?

No, it’s not! Today, popular game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine offer no-code/low-code AI plugins that require little to no coding knowledge. Additionally, the AI tools used for visual and text generation do not require coding knowledge. However, knowing how to code allows you to use AI in a more flexible and powerful way.

Is It Legal to Use AI-Generated Images or Text in My Game?

This is a bit of a gray area and depends on the terms of use of the specific AI tool you’re using. Most tools allow you to use the content you produce in commercial projects, but we recommend you read the license agreement carefully. Since copyright laws are constantly evolving in this field, it’s currently a good idea to follow the developments closely.
