Disney is gearing up for the next wave of digital technologies and the internet by appointing an executive to oversee metaverse strategies.
In a memo sent to employees by Disney executives, Mike White has been named Senior Vice President of Next-Generation Storytelling and Customer Experiences. White has been with Disney for over 10 years.
Disney CEO Bob Chapek described the metaverse as “the perfect environment for the company to continue its work on its strategic pillars of storytelling excellence, innovation, and audience focus” in the memo.
In this newly created role, Mike White will be responsible for identifying and assessing collaboration opportunities and sharing insights on the metaverse.
Additionally, he will lead a team proficient in technology, strategy, and storytelling.
What is Disney+?
Disney+ (pronounced “Disney Plus”) is a subscription-based video streaming service owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company.
It is the primary online “home” for movies and television shows from Disney’s biggest entertainment brands. The core content pillars of Disney+ include:
- Disney: A vast library of classic animated films, modern animated features, and live-action movies.
- Pixar: The complete collection of films and shorts from the animation studio (e.g., Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Soul).
- Marvel: The majority of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, as well as original, exclusive TV series (e.g., Loki, WandaVision).
- Star Wars: The entire Skywalker saga, spin-off films, and original series (e.g., The Mandalorian, Andor).
- National Geographic: A wide range of documentaries and factual programming.
In many international markets (including Turkey), Disney+ also includes the Star content hub. This section functions as a “brand within a brand,” offering more mature content (TV shows and movies) from Disney’s other owned studios, such as 20th Century Studios, FX, and Searchlight Pictures.
