Opel Backtracks on All-Electric Transition Plan

Previously having announced that it would only sell electric vehicles in Europe from 2028 onwards, Opel has now stated that it will continue to offer internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as long as there is demand.
Opel, a brand that already has one of the largest electric model lineups, has taken a step back from its all-electric vehicle transition strategy and announced that it will continue to focus on hybrid and internal combustion engine vehicles.

At the 2021 Stellantis EV Day, former CEO Michael Lohscheller announced that Opel would only offer electric vehicles in its main European market starting in 2028. However, this week, the company announced that it has abandoned its plan to electrify its entire model range and will continue to focus on its current “multi-energy” strategy.
Opel stands out as the first German brand to offer options in every model segment, including electric, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion engine vehicles. A company statement said, “This strategy does not have to be limited to 2028; it can change depending on demand.” Opel will continue to focus on electric vehicles in markets like Germany, the UK, and France, but will also offer other powertrain options based on demand. With this development, Opel has become the latest automaker, following brands such as Volvo, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW, to suspend its all-electric transition plans.
