What exactly is Snow Crash talking about?

Originally published in 1992, “Snow Crash” is set in a dystopian future where the majority of people reside in small storage units.

The story follows Hiro, a pizza delivery driver who finds himself in a series of adventures as he battles bandits in order to complete his pizza deliveries. Hiro spends his leisure time immersed in a virtual world known as the “Metaverse,” offering an escape from the harsh realities of daily life.

However, a computer virus begins to infect the inhabitants of the Metaverse, turning them into malevolent digital entities. The novel primarily centers around Hiro’s quest to stop the virus.

According to the Washington Post, the book has achieved sales exceeding 1 million copies in North America alone. Since its publication, enthusiasts of virtual reality have increasingly adopted Stephenson’s concept of the “metaverse” to describe the virtual worlds emerging from virtual reality technology. In recent years, the term has gained popularity as a trendy buzzword.

Concurrently, the rising prominence of the metaverse has opened up new career opportunities for some individuals and played a role in reshaping Web3 gaming.
