Apple Set to Revolutionize Reality in 2024

Apple is poised to make a significant impact in 2024 with an innovation expected to be groundbreaking, potentially influencing the entire realm of reality.

Reports indicate that Apple is actively recruiting engineers to construct a 3D world for a mixed reality headset, which has yet to be officially announced.

Early in 2021, it was reported that the company was working on a virtual and augmented reality headset. Trademark filings from August suggest that Apple might name this headset “Reality One” or “Reality Pro.”

Job Posting in Many Fields

Job listings from Apple’s technology development group reveal that the tech giant is seeking content creators for various roles. These include software developers to work on visual effects in augmented and virtual reality environments, and professionals to develop a video service featuring 3D content.

One specific job opening is for a senior software engineer specializing in graphics and simulation, requiring expertise in 3D graphics. This role involves leading the development of a simulation and synthetic data pipeline for machine learning training.

Apple has not immediately commented on these job postings. According to earlier reports, the anticipated product is expected to be equipped with 12 cameras and priced at $3,000, offering users real-time video footage of the external world.

While the 3D mixed reality world Apple is developing may bear similarities to the one envisioned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, Apple is unlikely to use the term “metaverse” to describe its version. Apple CEO Tim Cook, in an interview with Dutch media outlet Bright, expressed his reluctance to use the term “metaverse,” emphasizing the importance of people understanding what a concept truly is. He questioned whether the average person could define the metaverse.

However, Cook has shown interest in AR, describing it as a profound technology with the potential to impact everything. He also remarked that virtual reality is not a medium for living an entire life.

At a conference hosted by The Wall Street Journal in October, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, mentioned a term he would never use for the metaverse. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, agreed with Joswiak’s stance.

When is the Expected Date?

According to available information, Apple is poised to release its inaugural mixed reality headset in 2023. In July, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg informed his employees that the company is engaged in a deep, philosophical battle with Apple over the development of a virtual reality world.

Recently, Meta executed its first major layoff, letting go of nearly 11,000 employees. This substantial cost-cutting move comes at a time when investor concerns about the company’s metaverse strategy are escalating.

The layoffs at Meta were part of a response to the company’s slowing growth and investor apprehensions regarding Zuckerberg’s extensive spending on the metaverse. Meanwhile, competitors like Apple and Snapchat have indicated a preference for focusing on AR rather than VR. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel has even described AR as being more immersive.
