OpenAI is continuing its efforts to integrate an internal payment system into ChatGPT. Still in the development phase, the system will offer users the ability to order products during a chat. Sellers, in turn, will pay a commission to OpenAI for every order placed through this system.

ChatGPT is Getting a Payment System

According to information obtained, OpenAI has started showcasing early versions of the payment system to brands in collaboration with partners like Shopify. The system will allow ChatGPT to list products directly on the chat screen and enable users to create orders without having to visit a separate website.

This move by OpenAI will bring a significant change to the company’s revenue model. The company aims to transform the high user traffic on ChatGPT into a new revenue stream, not wanting to rely solely on subscription revenues. Despite the company’s current revenue run rate reaching $10 billion annually, it’s also known that they incurred a loss of approximately $5 billion last year.

Currently, ChatGPT displays products through links that redirect users to shopping sites. However, with the integrated payment system, the ordering process will become possible directly within the chat. There is no official statement yet on when the system will be implemented.
