The original manuscript is part of the second installment of the series. It is “encased in Genuine Xerox 4200 Paper,” fastened with masking tape, and contains edits and annotations in blue ink made by Neal Stephenson himself. Furthermore, the author has inscribed the book’s title on the back cover with a sharp pencil.

This manuscript, having undergone prior revisions, is also featured in Chapter 4 of the auction. The fourth chapter represents a later version, featuring handwritten notes and corrections by the author.

Additionally, other physical items being auctioned as part of the series include:

  • The original painting used as the cover art for the paperback edition of the book, which was released in 1993.
  • The leather jacket to be featured in the video promotion of the comic.
  • The slides used in the creation of the comic book concept.
  • An actual sword inspired by the book’s protagonist, complete with the sword being included in the auction.

In addition to these physical items, the auction will also feature digital art NFTs inspired by the graphic novel concept from the previous Snow Crash series.

Originally published in 1992, “Snow Crash” is set in a dystopian future where the majority of people reside in small storage units.

The story follows Hiro, a pizza delivery driver who finds himself in a series of adventures as he battles bandits in order to complete his pizza deliveries. Hiro spends his leisure time immersed in a virtual world known as the “Metaverse,” offering an escape from the harsh realities of daily life.

However, a computer virus begins to infect the inhabitants of the Metaverse, turning them into malevolent digital entities. The novel primarily centers around Hiro’s quest to stop the virus.

According to the Washington Post, the book has achieved sales exceeding 1 million copies in North America alone. Since its publication, enthusiasts of virtual reality have increasingly adopted Stephenson’s concept of the “metaverse” to describe the virtual worlds emerging from virtual reality technology. In recent years, the term has gained popularity as a trendy buzzword.

Concurrently, the rising prominence of the metaverse has opened up new career opportunities for some individuals and played a role in reshaping Web3 gaming.
