Nanjing University Opens Metaverse Engineering Department
The much-anticipated metaverse presentation by Walmart took place today, following the company’s strategic move indicated by its application for virtual goods and currencies in December 2021.
William White, the Chief Marketing Officer of Walmart US for Roblox, highlighted that the decision to choose Roblox was driven by the significant amount of time customers, especially children, spend there. Data shows that around a quarter of Roblox’s 52.2 million users in the second quarter of the year are under the age of 13.
Walmart’s foray into the metaverse will notably include a range of children’s toys, with some being themed around Jurassic Park. Additionally, the platform will offer tokens, rewards, and various virtual goods for gaming.
This strategic move signifies Walmart’s intention to play a more active role in the digital sector. In the Metaverse universe, billboards emphasize that the platform includes all the best toys, showcasing Walmart’s commitment to combining retail with virtual experiences.
Metaverse research labs appear for the first time this year
The emergence of research labs dedicated to the ‘metaverse’ is a new development in China this year, following the immense popularity of the concept in 2021.
In August, major technology giants including Tencent, Huawei, and Epic Games initiated research labs focused on the metaverse and virtual reality through collaborations with several Chinese universities. Additionally, in April, Renmin University of China made an announcement regarding the establishment of the ‘Metaverse Research Center’.
This marks a significant commitment to exploring and advancing the metaverse and virtual reality technologies within China’s academic and tech communities.
