5 Things ChatGPT Still Can’t Do in 2025

ChatGPT is currently one of our most widely used AI tools, yet it still faces several technical limitations and has intentionally restricted features. So, what are they?
Artificial intelligence is constantly evolving, but it’s still far from perfect. While large language models like ChatGPT excel in some areas, there are certain things they either cannot do at all or fail at due to their inherent limitations, even when attempting them.
If you’re a frequent ChatGPT user, you might have noticed that you sometimes don’t get the precise answers you’re looking for. Why? Because this system has specific limitations, deliberate restrictions, and technical shortcomings.
1. Cannot Generate Truly Creative and Original Ideas

Yes, ChatGPT can write poetry, craft a story, or generate ideas for an image, but none of these can be considered true creativity.
What it actually does is analyze millions of examples it has seen in its training data and imitate those patterns. It lacks the unique and original spark of creativity that stems from human experiences, emotions, and imagination. It synthesizes what already exists but cannot “create out of nothing.”
2. Lacks Emotional Intelligence and Cannot Empathize

ChatGPT cannot understand emotions. If you tell it you’re sad, it will give you generic, programmed responses like “I’m sorry to hear you’re sad” because it cannot feel the true weight, pain, or joy behind those words.
It cannot offer you the complex social dynamics, empathy, and warmth of a true friend. Therefore, if you’re looking for emotional support or a deep conversational partner, ChatGPT is, contrary to popular belief, the wrong place to look.
3. Cannot Make Judgments on Ethical and Moral Dilemmas

Concepts of “right” and “wrong” vary based on cultural, personal, and situational contexts. ChatGPT cannot navigate these complex moral and ethical labyrinths. When presented with a complex ethical problem, it will usually list different perspectives but will never make a clear judgment or tell you, “you should do this.”
However, language models like ChatGPT are programmed to reject dangerous, illegal, and unethical requests (for example, planning to harm someone or engage in illegal activity).
4. Cannot Perform High-Level Reasoning

It can solve simple logic problems, but when many variables and steps are involved, it can experience “catastrophic failures.”
It particularly struggles with advanced mathematics, debugging complex coding errors, or situations where it must adhere to multiple rules simultaneously. In instances requiring step-by-step reasoning, it can sometimes make fundamental logical errors and fail to manage the process effectively.
5. Cannot Interact with Your Devices

There might be times when you want ChatGPT to interact with your devices. For example, Siri can control your iPhone and Mac to perform actions like playing music, turning off Bluetooth, or calling a contact.
ChatGPT is not exactly a personal assistant, but thanks to Apple’s support, it can only be used via voice and text. For now, it cannot interact with your devices to the same extent as Siri.
