Zoom’s AI Discussion and Update

The widely used online video conferencing platform, Zoom, which saw a significant increase in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, recently came under fire for its use of artificial intelligence.

A BBC report highlighted that in June, Zoom introduced a feature that, using AI, summarized users’ meetings without needing recordings. This raised concerns among both experts and regular users.

In response to the backlash, Zoom updated its terms of service to clarify, “Zoom will not use audio, video, or chat content to train its AI models without user consent.”

Data protection specialist, Robert Bateman, voiced apprehensions regarding this AI-enabled feature, suggesting it could allow Zoom to access more user data than necessary.

He remarked, “The terms of service give Zoom considerable flexibility to use user data for a variety of purposes.” This situation has prompted users to become more vigilant and informed about the permissions they give to online platforms.
