Valve Surpasses Giants Like Apple and Google in Revenue Per Employee

Valve, the owner of the Steam platform and a prominent game developer, boasts an exceptionally efficient corporate structure. The company is reportedly leaving giants behind with an estimated revenue of around $50 million per employee.
The Unmatched Efficiency of Valve

Valve, the owner of the Steam platform and manufacturer of the Steam Deck, is widely regarded as one of the world’s most efficient companies. Alinea Analytics’ Head of Market Analysis shared on X that Steam alone generated $16.2 billion in revenue. According to some estimates, the company’s total revenue is projected to reach $17 billion in 2025. Assuming an average employee count of around 350 between 2012 and 2021, this suggests that Valve generates approximately $50 million in revenue per employee.
It’s important to note that since Valve is a privately held company, these figures are based on research firm reports and leaked information, rather than official data. However, the available data aligns with previous information. In 2021, the independent game studio Wolfire, which filed a lawsuit against Valve, claimed the company had around 360 employees. In the same year, Microsoft estimated Valve’s revenue to be around $6.5 billion, which translates to over $18 million in revenue per employee.
Leaving Giants Far Behind

These figures nearly double the revenue per employee of other major corporations. According to data from Visual Capitalist, even the overall leader in revenue per employee, McKesson, generates only $8.2 million per employee. This figure is even lower among technology companies: Apple generates $2.4 million per employee, and Alphabet (Google) generates $1.9 million.
Valve is aware of this difference. Its “New Employee Handbook,” published in 2012, states: “Our profitability per employee is higher than Google, Amazon, or Microsoft. The right response to that is to put as much of that money back into the pockets of the people creating it.” The company claims to offer one of the best compensation packages in the industry. According to leaked documents shared by The Verge, Valve paid its employees a total of approximately $450 million, with the average salary per employee exceeding $1.3 million.
How Valve Achieves This Efficiency
Valve is able to achieve this by being an entirely private company with no accountability to shareholders or investment funds. This allows Gabe Newell and the other partners to focus on the company’s long-term health rather than the pressure for short-term gains. Additionally, the company operates with a flat organizational structure where there are no managers, and everyone works as a team member.
While the company is not without flaws (for instance, being one of the first to popularize the loot box trend in PC gaming), it has undoubtedly contributed significantly to the gaming community and the industry. Alongside iconic titles like Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Dota 2, and Left 4 Dead, it transformed the game purchasing experience with Steam and offered tremendous opportunities to independent developers. In 2022, it revitalized the handheld console market with the Steam Deck, and excitement continues to build for the new Steam Machine device, expected to be released in 2026.
