Toyota is Electrifying the World’s Best-Selling Car: Meet the New Corolla

Toyota is reinventing its best-selling sedan with the Corolla Concept. The new Corolla stands out with its modern design and innovative interior, offering electric, hybrid, and gasoline options.
Toyota is taking a historic step for the Corolla, the world’s best-selling car. The production-near Corolla Concept, unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show in Japan, will have a flexible infrastructure capable of running on plug-in hybrid, electric, and gasoline options, as well as alternative fuels. Since 1966, the Corolla, which has appeared in many body styles such as hatchback, sedan, wagon, and coupe, has become the best-selling car in history with over 55 million sales.
Toyota’s Approach

Toyota’s approach signals a potential shift in its electric vehicle (EV) strategy, a topic of long-standing curiosity in the automotive world. This year, the company expanded its portfolio with the updated bZ series, the bZ Woodland, the new C-HR compact crossover, and the electric Land Cruiser currently under development. However, an affordable electric Corolla could facilitate an impressive global transformation.
Details of the Corolla Concept
The Corolla Concept features a rather bold design line compared to previous models. It stands out with its two-tone black and silver body, thin LED headlights, and a horizontal bar extending across the grille. The charging port is located behind the vehicle’s front left wheel, and Toyota’s visuals also show a battery charge status indicator. In the interior design, a three-spoke steering wheel, a large display panel, and a touch control area positioned between the driver and passenger are prominent. The inclusion of a separate screen in front of the passenger seat is interpreted as a feature specifically designed for the Chinese market.
Details regarding the powertrain systems have not yet been shared, but both the gasoline and hybrid versions of the vehicle are expected to be supported by Toyota’s new, ultra-efficient engines. As known, Toyota is working on a new-generation engine family, including 1.5 and 2.0-liter variants. The electric version is particularly important for meeting the global need for affordable and high-quality EVs.
Although it is currently only a concept, the sedan offers a direct look at what the new Corolla will be like, featuring 21-inch Y-spoke wheels and a sharp-lined, modern body. While we are used to seeing bold touches in concept cars, its presentation under a production model name indicates that Toyota plans to seriously advance its design language for the future Corolla.
The current generation was launched in 2018 and is now seven years old. Therefore, Toyota will not want to keep its global record-selling model with the old design for much longer. The new generation Corolla is expected to be launched in late 2026 or 2027.
