The World’s Largest Rooftop Solar Power Plant of 50 MW is Being Built!

Bahrain is commencing a gigantic solar energy project with a capacity of 123 MWp. The 50 MW capacity rooftop system to be installed under this project will be the world’s largest rooftop solar power plant.

Foulath Holding, based in Bahrain, has partnered with Yellow Door Energy, one of the Middle East and Africa’s leading sustainable energy developers, to launch a massive solar energy project with a total capacity of 123 MWp. The project is considered a historic step in line with the country’s Net Zero 2060 target.

190 Thousand Panels Will Be Used

The project, spearheaded by Foulath Holding, will include the world’s largest single-site rooftop solar power plant. This 50 MWp capacity rooftop system will be installed on a new 262,000 square meter stockpile area and will house 77,000 solar panels. The total capacity of the facility will be 123 MWp.

Upon completion, the facility will consist of 10 rooftop and 4 ground-mounted photovoltaic systems, and it will be recorded as one of the world’s largest industrial-scale “on-site” solar power generation facilities. Housing a total of 189,900 high-efficiency panels, the facility will cover an area of 707,000 square meters.

For small island nations like Bahrain, establishing large-scale solar power plants on wide open land is not an ideal option. Therefore, rooftop systems offer a sustainable solution for renewable energy production by ensuring space efficiency.

Comprising a total of ten rooftop and four ground-mounted photovoltaic systems, the facility is expected to generate approximately 200 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity in its first year. This production will significantly reduce the environmental impact by cutting 90,000 metric tons of carbon emissions annually.

The project is a continuation of Foulath Holding’s long-term environmental strategy. The company’s Chairman, Meshary Al-Judaimi, announced that they have invested approximately $250 million in sustainability in recent years.

According to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Bahrain’s total solar energy capacity reached 66 MW by the end of last year. The country had announced plans in 2017 to commission 255 MW of solar power capacity by the end of this year. The country’s Electricity and Water Authority launched a tender for 100 MW of solar power last month.
