10 Movies That Predict Technologies That Could Soon Enter Our Lives

Presenting remarkable visions of the future, some focusing on artificial intelligence and others on the Metaverse, here are 10 movies that predict technologies that could soon enter our lives!
Science fiction works hold a significant place, both for predicting the future that awaits us and, at times, for inspiring it. From 2001: A Space Odyssey to Star Trek, and from Back to the Future to Blade Runner, there have been many films that foresaw today’s technologies years in advance. That’s why we can once again look to films to see what awaits us in the coming era.
10 Movies That Predict New Technologies 🍿
In this list, we have compiled 10 films that predict technologies we expect to see in our lives in the near future. Here are the films that foresee technologies that could soon enter our lives:
1️⃣ Her

Spike Jonze’s Her focuses on a lonely man who purchases OS1, marketed as “the world’s first artificial intelligence operating system.” The protagonist, Theodore, quickly forms a bond with OS1’s voice assistant, Sam, and begins to develop deeper feelings for this artificial intelligence.
Her will likely be the first film on this list that we see become a reality. In fact, we are already starting to see technologies similar to those in Her in real life. When OpenAI introduced the voice chat mode in its GPT-4o model, many people were immediately reminded of the film Her. Although AI programs like GPT and Siri are not yet as advanced or realistic as Sam in the film, it seems inevitable that they will reach this level in the very near future.
2️⃣ Ready Player One

In Ready Player One, master director Steven Spielberg reveals what the Metaverse could evolve into in the near future.
Adapted from Ernest Cline’s science fiction novel of the same name, Ready Player One centers on an ordinary young man who embarks on a dangerous adventure inside a virtual world called OASIS. Technologies that could enter our lives in the very near future, from advanced VR headsets to full-body haptic suits, are brought to life in Ready Player One. On the other hand, Spielberg also shows how this virtual universe will be shaped by advertisers and corporations seeking to make a profit.
3️⃣ Back to the Future

There are few films as important as Back to the Future when it comes to predicting and, to some extent, guiding future technology.
Robert Zemeckis’s classic series, especially the second film from 1989, presented a remarkable depiction of the future. Some technologies, like AR glasses, wearable devices, and biometric identity, have already become a reality. Other technologies we saw in Back to the Future, such as flying cars and hoverboards, look set to become real within the next 10 years.
4️⃣ Ex-Machina

Alex Garland’s Ex-Machina focuses on a young programmer tasked with evaluating a revolutionary artificial intelligence. As he begins to bond with this AI, which is housed in a female body, the young programmer starts to question how this “entity” should be approached.
Like Her, Ex-Machina is another film whose reflections we are already beginning to see in real life. Although we haven’t yet encountered a robot as realistic as Ava from Ex-Machina, with advanced AI programs like GPT on one hand and humanoid robot projects like the Tesla Atlas on the other, it seems quite possible that we will see designs close to Ex-Machina in the world of robotics within the next 10 years.
5️⃣ Minority Report

Another science fiction film by Steven Spielberg, Minority Report takes viewers to the year 2054. While telling its story, Minority Report presents an interesting vision of the future and depicts technologies that could soon become real in two key areas.
The first of these is personalized digital ads. In the film, companies scan people’s retinas in public spaces to show everyone different ads. Minority Report reveals where these personalized ads, whose early examples we see online today, could evolve in the near future. Another technology that Minority Report predicted back in 2002 is computers controlled by hand gestures. Like personalized ads, this technology now has a real-world counterpart. But looking at Minority Report, we can better see where it might evolve in the near future.
6️⃣ I, Robot

Inspired by Isaac Asimov’s work of the same name, I, Robot is set in 2035 America, where humanoid robots are used in every aspect of life.
Starring the famous actor Will Smith, I, Robot paints an impressive picture of the future with its futuristic designs. As one of the films that proves science fiction not only predicts the future but also inspires it, I, Robot came into the spotlight during the recent Tesla Robotaxi event. This was because both Tesla’s new robotaxi and its autonomous minibus closely resembled the vehicles in I, Robot. Indeed, Tesla doesn’t hide this inspiration much. On the other hand, the robot designs in the film also set a precedent for the humanoid robots we are now beginning to see from companies like Tesla.
7️⃣ Darkman

Sam Raimi’s 1990 science fiction film Darkman focuses on a scientist who, after being burned in a fire, begins to produce synthetic skin to survive and take revenge on those who left him for dead.
Sam Raimi’s film does an impressive job by predicting the creation of synthetic skin and artificial organs using 3D printers almost 35 years in advance. The creation of synthetic organs using 3D printers is now just one step away from becoming a reality. In fact, we have already started to see the first examples of this.
8️⃣ A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence is set in a future where human-like robots have been developed and are used in many different ways in daily life. The film tells the story of David, a robot child who is cast out by the family that adopted him.
Although A.I. Artificial Intelligence is mostly remembered for David’s emotional journey, Spielberg actually presents a layered vision of the future regarding the role robots will play in our lives. The film briefly touches upon many different scenarios we might see in the near future, from robot sex workers to homeless robots who have been cast aside.
9️⃣ Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

The Star Wars series is definitely not a franchise grounded in reality. However, there are a few exceptional cases where the series maintains a strong connection to reality. Perhaps the most striking of these appears in Episode II.
In the film, Count Dooku travels in a spaceship that resembles a sailing vessel. This spacecraft design, which uses solar sails, is actually among the designs that the scientific community has been focusing on recently. It is thought that this design could be particularly useful for spacecraft on long-distance journeys. It is believed that a vehicle launched into space with ignition could then open its solar sails to continue its journey. Projects like IKAROS and LightSail use designs just like the one we saw in Star Wars.
🔟 Transcendence

While the 2014 film Transcendence was unsuccessful as a movie, it possesses some interesting ideas about future technologies.
The main story of the film is based on the idea that the human brain will one day be fully mapped and that consciousness can be transferred to a digital medium. Although the scientific world is still far from achieving this, work in this direction has already begun. For example, Elon Musk’s Neuralink project is already doing remarkable work in reading and digitally recreating signals from the human brain.
Another futuristic technology we see in Transcendence is self-replicating nanobots. In the film, Johnny Depp’s character uses nanotechnology for many purposes, from cleaning the environment to healing people. While reaching the level shown in the film may not happen in the near future, nanotechnology has now become an important branch of science.
When it comes to predicting technologies that will enter our lives in the near future and contemplating how they will affect life, very few productions can hold a candle to Black Mirror.
This British series, which started on the BBC and later moved to Netflix, presents compelling stories about future scenarios we might face in almost every area, from virtual reality to social media, and from video games to artificial intelligence.
