OpenAI has added a new Study Mode feature to ChatGPT, aiming to enhance students’ critical thinking skills. Unlike its normal operation, this mode does not provide direct answers.
OpenAI announced that it has added a new feature called “Study Mode” to ChatGPT, designed to help students grasp subjects in depth rather than simply getting answers. The new mode asks questions to gauge the student’s level of understanding and, in some cases, refuses to give a direct answer until the student interacts with the content.
ChatGPT to Act as a Tutor
As of Tuesday, Study Mode began rolling out to all logged-in users with ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. OpenAI plans to bring this feature to Edu subscribers in the coming weeks. This group typically covers packages subscribed to collectively by school administrators for the entire student body.
With this move, OpenAI aims to transform ChatGPT from a mere answer engine into an effective learning tool. ChatGPT had previously faced criticism within the education community for potentially dulling students’ thinking skills. In fact, ChatGPT was banned in schools in some countries. In Turkey, too, the use of tools like ChatGPT in education is not recommended by educators. However, China, a pioneer in artificial intelligence, mandates the use of this technology and its tools by students.
On the other hand, ChatGPT Study Mode is currently an optional, selectable feature. Therefore, there is no control mechanism where an administrator or parent can make this mode mandatory. However, it is stated that such oversight tools might be considered in the future. Consequently, the effectiveness of the learning process depends entirely on the student’s motivation.
