1X Neo: A $20,000 Humanoid Robot That Learns Household Chores

1X’s new humanoid robot, NEO, will learn and perform household chores remotely. The robot, available for pre-order with a $20,000 price tag, also stands out with its privacy measures.

Earlier this year, Norwegian robotics startup 1X Technologies, headquartered in the U.S., unveiled its humanoid robot NEO and announced that it would begin serving in homes later in the year. That moment has now arrived. 1X has started taking pre-orders for the NEO humanoid robot, designed to automate household chores. The company will begin shipments next year for the robot, which is priced at $20,000.

Buy or Rent

NEO is a home robot developed to simplify daily life, controllable via verbal commands or a mobile application. The device will be able to autonomously perform basic tasks such as opening doors, retrieving objects, or turning lights on and off. However, when users want the robot to perform more complex or custom tasks, these operations will be carried out remotely by a human operator. This means that operators will be able to see inside the users’ homes through the robot’s camera.

Company CEO Bernt Bornich stated in an interview that NEO’s artificial intelligence system still needs to learn from real-world experiences. Bornich emphasized that real user data is critical for the robot to become smarter.

Security is a Priority

In the initial stage, most of NEO’s tasks will be performed remotely by teleoperators. The robot will be able to learn these operations over time. Users can specify when the teleoperator will intervene and what task will be performed via the robot’s connected application. 1X says that control over privacy rests entirely with the users. The system includes security measures such as blurring people, creating “no-go zones” in the home, and preventing the operator from taking control without permission.

Nevertheless, Bornich drew attention to possible cybersecurity risks, stating that NEO is equipped with a multi-layered security system and that user safety is the priority.

NEO, which will be offered in three different color options—sand, grey, and dark brown—has been opened for pre-order on 1X’s official website with a $200 deposit. The robot can be purchased for $20,000 for users seeking early access or rented through a subscription model for $499 per month.

Dishes in 5 Minutes, Laundry in 15 Minutes

According to 1X’s founder and CEO, NEO is not just a robot but a long-term artificial intelligence project that will transform human labor. The goal is obvious: for NEO to autonomously take over all the household chores that people have to do over time. According to the CEO, emptying a dishwasher will take around five minutes, and folding laundry around 15 minutes. Yes, these are long durations, but they could make a big difference, especially for the elderly.

1X plans to produce hundreds of thousands of NEOs in the long run. The company also plans to develop humanoid robots specifically for office and industrial areas in the future, not just for home users. Its competitors include giants such as Agility Robotics, Apptronik, Figure AI, and Tesla. However, 1X’s distinction is that it designed NEO specifically to operate in a home environment.

By the way, NEO is 168 cm tall and weighs approximately 30 kg. Beneath the robot’s exterior lies serious engineering. 1X’s internally produced motors have five times more torque than its competitors. This allows NEO to lift loads up to 70 kilograms and perform movements quite close to the human hand with its hands that have 22 degrees of freedom (DOF). The robot offers 4 hours of usage on a single charge and can automatically recharge its own battery when necessary.

1X aims for NEO to be not only a home assistant but also a conversational digital friend. The robot contains visual recognition, voice command detection, and an LLM (Large Language Model) with memory.
