Microsoft’s Gaming Copilot is Secretly Collecting Gamers’ Gameplay Footage!

Microsoft’s new Gaming Copilot AI is collecting players’ screenshots and in-game conversations by default and using them for model training. Here are the details and how to disable the settings.

An interesting detail noticed by a user on the ResetEra forum revealed that the Microsoft Gaming Copilot, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) automatically installed with Windows 11, is sending screenshots and recordings from the games users play. This data is being used by Microsoft to train its own AI models.

Furthermore, this feature is enabled by default. This means that unless you manually disable it, Microsoft can use your in-game activities to develop its Artificial Intelligence.

The “Model Training” Option is Active by Default

Information verified by Wccftech confirms that by navigating to Game Bar > Settings > Privacy Settings in Windows, the option “Model training over text for Gaming Copilot” is automatically enabled.

The author sharing the news stated that they found this feature active on their own laptop and subsequently turned it off.

Gaming Copilot can also use players’ voice conversations during gameplay as training data. However, this feature is not currently enabled by default. Beyond this, the system can also collect personalization and memory data. Your text or voice chats with Gaming Copilot are also being recorded.

How Can You Turn Off These Settings?

Users who do not wish to share all this data can disable the settings by following these steps: Game Bar > Gaming Copilot > Settings gear (bottom left) > Privacy Settings.

By turning off the relevant options here, you can prevent Copilot from using your gaming experience for AI training.

Microsoft’s Recent Policies are Drawing Criticism

Microsoft has faced a growing loss of trust among gamers in recent months.

  • The price of Xbox Series consoles increased for the second time this year in the US.
  • The price for Xbox development kits was also raised, increasing hardware costs for game developers.
  • Game Pass subscription fees were hiked by 50%, while reward programs and discount campaigns were ended during the same period.
  • The company is also reportedly working on an ad-supported Cloud Gaming version.

And now, on top of all this, it has been revealed that Microsoft is using players’ game data to train its Artificial Intelligence without their knowledge.

Gamers’ Backlash is Growing

All these developments are making it increasingly difficult for the Microsoft and Xbox brand to maintain a positive image with gamers. The company, which laid off over 9,000 employees to pivot towards AI, is now the target of criticism over its user privacy policies.
