Microsoft Unveils Copilot 3D to Convert 2D Images to 3D Models

Microsoft has introduced its new AI-powered tool, Copilot 3D, which can convert 2D images into 3D models for free. This tool, available as a preview within Copilot Labs, is accessible to all Copilot users globally without needing a Copilot Pro subscription.

The tool works through the web version of Copilot and supports JPG or PNG images smaller than 10 MB. Microsoft states that the best results are achieved with images that have a plain background, balanced lighting, and a sense of depth. However, it doesn’t perform well with images of people (like a profile photo) or other living creatures.

The converted models can be downloaded in GLB format, which is compatible with many 3D viewers, design software, and game engines. Users can also convert these files to the SLT format to edit them in tools like Blender or prepare them for 3D printing.

During tests, Copilot 3D produced results in under a minute. Although some distortions or minor geometric errors were noted in the generated models, even with a clean background, these can be corrected using professional software. This makes Copilot 3D an efficient way to quickly create 3D models for projects, and its applications could expand, particularly in fields like e-commerce.
