Meta is Bringing the Real World into the Virtual World with Quest VR

Tech giant Meta is transforming spaces into photorealistic virtual copies with its Quest VR headsets. With the Hyperscape app, spaces can be scanned and then explored.

Alongside its breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, Meta continues to pursue its investments in virtual reality (VR). Meta is launching its “Hyperscape” technology, which will allow you to transform real-world spaces into digital, photorealistic VR copies using a Quest VR headset.

From the Real World to the Virtual Universe

Thanks to this innovation, which begins rolling out gradually starting today, users will be able to scan spaces and create virtual copies using the Hyperscape Capture beta app with their Quest 3 or Quest 3S headsets. Currently, you can only explore the scanned areas by yourself, but Meta states that users will soon be able to visit these spaces together by sharing a special link.

Hyperscape was first introduced at the Connect 2024 event. Although the technology is still in development, Meta envisions that virtual re-creations of real environments could be a significant use case for its VR and metaverse goals.

Attendees who had the opportunity to explore pre-scanned rooms at the Connect 2025 event noted that the spaces were remarkably close to their real-life details. Among the examples provided by the company was the home kitchen of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. According to reports, even getting close to small details like the food on the table or stacks of books offers an impressive experience.

On the other hand, although the Hyperscape app is in beta, the scanning experience with Quest headsets is reportedly easy and intuitive. When the scanning process begins, the app overlays a virtual mesh on the surrounding objects and then guides the user to move closer to them to perform detailed scans. As an object or area is scanned, the virtual mesh disappears, visually indicating which details have been captured.
