Kawasaki Develops Rugged Terrain Robot Inspired by Wolves

Kawasaki’s new rugged terrain robot is designed to navigate through challenging environments with ease. Named CORLEO, the robot is powered by hydrogen fuel cells and equipped with AI systems, offering high flexibility and adaptability.
Inspired by the agility of wolves, CORLEO is a four-legged robot built to carry human riders across rough terrains. With a design that blends the posture of a horse and the movements of deer or panthers, this robot provides an alternative to off-road motorcycles. CORLEO responds to the rider’s body movements, offering improved balance and intelligent navigation through its integrated AI system.
Kawasaki’s Terrain-Riding Robot Unveiled
Japanese multinational Kawasaki Heavy Industries Group unveiled CORLEO at a showcase event for the upcoming Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025. Designed to be ridden like an animal, this hydrogen-powered prototype reflects a growing trend among Japanese manufacturers toward clean energy solutions.
CORLEO operates using a hydrogen fuel cell and a 150cc engine, combining sustainability with advanced robotics. Its four robotic legs function autonomously, enabling it to navigate complex landscapes. The robot’s design is said to be inspired by futuristic video games like Horizon Zero Dawn by PlayStation.
Real-Time Control with Rider Movements

Unlike traditional controls, CORLEO reacts directly to the rider’s body shifts. Adjusting the center of gravity alters the robot’s gait in real-time, making it intuitive to maneuver even for beginners. A head-up display (HUD) shows critical data like hydrogen levels, navigation information, and weight distribution for motion stability.
Though still in its conceptual phase, CORLEO doesn’t yet offer detailed specs such as top speed, range, or battery life. However, its potential as a next-generation mobility solution is already being recognized.
A Glimpse into the Future of Mobility
Kawasaki envisions CORLEO as a futuristic replacement for traditional off-road bikes. Known for its production of high-speed trains, aircraft engines, and all-terrain vehicles, Kawasaki continues to position itself at the forefront of innovation and next-gen vehicle manufacturing.
With CORLEO, Kawasaki blends biomimicry, clean energy, and artificial intelligence into a single machine, marking a bold step toward redefining how humans explore rough terrains.
